I just heard that birth control pills have a higher risk of linking to strokes?

I just heard that birth control pills have a higher risk of linking to strokes.... is this anything new?? i know all the commercials like yaz tell you the risks like, ';Yaz can lead to risk of heart attack, blood clots, blah, blah, blah....'; is the stroke thing old like how all the commercials always have risks or is this a new thing that birth control has just been discovered to be more risky of getting strokes? is it just as risky as all the other side effects or risks and i shouldn't worry or what? if not birth control, what should i take? i have a friend who just had a stroke and i am so worried about myself. it is absolutely horrible! is this risk thing about strokes anything new or should just old news about birth control pills and I shouldn't worry about taking birth control in the future? i must know the facts!! tell me the truth plz....I just heard that birth control pills have a higher risk of linking to strokes?
This is not anything new. The estrogen in birth control pills (and other methods of birth control, such as NuvaRing, the patch, etc) is what increases the risk for clotting. If you are really concerned about it, there are simple things you can do to help decrease the risk, such as not smoking, avoiding an overly sedentary lifestyle, and either taking a baby aspirin before long car/airplane trips or making sure you stretch your legs every few hours. You could also look in to progesterone-only options, such as DepoProvera (the shot) or the Mirena IUD. If you don't have a family history of blood clots, strokes, etc, and you aren't overweight, a smoker, or have other risk factors, then you should have nothing to worry about. Of course, I am not a Dr. so speaking with your physician or OB/GYN for his/her opinion is always the best idea!I just heard that birth control pills have a higher risk of linking to strokes?
sure, some women have a higher risk of stroke due to the hormones causing blood clots. the thing is...it's kind of rare that that would happen. if you don't smoke and aren't over 35, the risk is minimal. if you're really worried, go to a low dose birth control.
The risk of strokes is nothing new, in fact the risk of strokes from birth control pills has gone down thin the 50 years they have been in use because they are getting better at formulating them

The risk of stroke with birth control pills is greater if you are older that 35 and smoke and are inactive.

Taking care of yourself is still the best protection against stroke. If you are over 35 there are other methods of birth control that might be more suitable such as Depo-provera.

Condoms remain a very good method of birth control if used correctly 100% of the time and carry no health risk at all.
