Birth control pills increase the risk of stroke and heart attack, because they increase the development of blood clots that can lead to strokes or heart attacks. Most birth control pills contain an estrogen and progesterone component, and it is the estrogen component that increases the risk of blood clots. Birth control pills increase the production of clotting proteins by the liver which promotes blood clotting. They also decrease the production of proteins that inhibit the clotting cascade. Birth control pill use also leads to an acquired activated protein C resistance thereby preventing the breakdown of clot. Protein C is an important inhibitor of the clotting mechanism. Birth control pills also do increase blood pressure in some cases, which is a risk factor for stroke. You asked for details. Let me know if you do not understand something.
